(MA391) Character Setup: Rigging

About the Course

This course focused on how to use Maya's rigging tools to properly set up a character for use by an animator in a production environment.

Upon successful completion of this course, students should have been able to or acquired:

  • Extended technical proficiency in Maya

  • Setup a full body rig with IK Legs and IK/FK arms and a bendable back

  • Create controls and custom attributes that allowed easy manipulation of the bound character

  • Use weight painting to attach the geometry to the rig, enabling the animator to easily manipulate and keyframe the character.

  • A clear understanding of the rigging process

  • Strong in-scene organization and management

Software used: Maya

Credits: 3 | 1 Quarter

 

Demoed Character:

Each student walked through the rigging process for the below character with me. After which, they were tasked with taking the skills they learned and applying them to a character of their choosing. For most, this was their first experience with rigging.
