(MA136) Image Manipulation

About the Course

This course covered the fundamentals of image manipulation in a raster-based environment. Emphasis on tools, color management, scanning, filters, layering, masking, and channels for design, animation, textures, and compositing.

Upon successful completion of this course, students should have been able to successfully navigate and utilize the tools presented in Photoshop to manipulate and enhance digital images and to create original works through color theory and drawing techniques.

This course was intended to be a practical introduction to the functionality of Photoshop and its uses within the world of media arts. The primary objectives were the following:

  • Practice effective file management and organization

  • Develop technical skills in Photoshop and optionally InDesign

  • Become exposed to professional production environments

  • Develop efficient workflows within the software

  • Utilize the software to achieve design tasks

 

Projects represented below:

  • Midterm Project: Create one photorealistic image comprised of elements that do not ordinarily go together in real life, or are combined in such a way as to break 'reality'.

  • Final Project: Create personal branding and marketing materials showing for future portfolios - Disc booklets (when we were still doing that), business cards or other print material.

Software used: Photoshop

Credits: 3 | 1 Quarter

 

Student Examples: The below projects represent exemplary work for this course and point of progression in the program. For student privacy, artist names are withheld and contact information is blurred on portfolio driven projects.
